# How to Setup and Managing Event, Watchdog, POI, and Sensor Alarms

### Alarm event list

![](https://support.gsfleet.io/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-48-20-0948-AM.png?width=823&height=246&name=image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-48-20-0948-AM.png)

There are four alarm category types. These categories are presented under the different tabs they belong to. To set up or edit an alarm, you must first choose the correct tab before you can edit it. Independent of the alarm type, this mainly consists of:

- One or several objects that cause the event.
- One or several recipients of the alert.
- Configuration and choice of event.
- Settings for time, language, and repetition frequency of the alert.

The available alarm types are:

- **Event** — An event happens when the unit itself discovers that something is happening. The unit sends a description of the event to the servers at Guard Systems. If an alarm has been connected to this event, an alert will be sent out.
- **Watchdog** — The server checks at regular intervals when a unit last reported in. If reporting is discontinued for longer than the configured interval, the system will send a notification.
- **POI** — A POI, or point of interest, is a coordinate defined in the system. If this POI belongs to a reference group that has been set up for alarms, an object will generate an alert when passing the POI.
- **Sensor** — Some units can be connected to analog sensors. If this has been done, it is possible to create an alert if the sensor value exceeds predefined threshold values.

### Objects with alarm

![](https://support.gsfleet.io/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-48-35-1296-AM.png?width=817&height=162&name=image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-48-35-1296-AM.png)

The list shows which objects are set up with alarms, and how many alarms are connected to each object. The list doesn’t let you edit the alarms, but the lines are clickable and will show the alarms connected to the object.

### Object alarms

![](https://support.gsfleet.io/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-48-47-9884-AM.png?width=667&height=96&name=image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-48-47-9884-AM.png)

The list shows an overview of all alarms connected to an object, and it is possible to edit an alarm from this list. Description of the columns:

- **Title** — The “Title” field on the different alarms. It has no bearing on the alarm’s function.
- **Type** — Shows the type of alarm. The type matches the tabs under Alarms.
- **Event/Sensor** — For alarms where applicable, shows which event or sensor the alarm monitors.
- **Status** — Shows whether the alarm is activated or deactivated. If temporarily activated or deactivated, this is clearly stated.
- **Activated until** — If the activation or deactivation is temporary, the time it applies to is listed here. This field is normally blank.

**Remember:** If an alarm being edited this way is connected to several objects, those objects’ alarms will also be edited.

### Latest alarms

![](https://support.gsfleet.io/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-49-08-0403-AM.png?width=823&height=136&name=image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-49-08-0403-AM.png)

The list gives an overview of sent notifications. Alarms that were not sent — due to the configured time span, temporary deactivation, or any other reason — will not be shown in this list.

If an active filter exists, it will be shown in the title menu. The filter can be removed through the filter settings.

### Filter

![](https://support.gsfleet.io/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-49-22-0300-AM.png?width=470&height=231&name=image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-49-22-0300-AM.png)

Filter settings for the alarm log. Only the chosen elements in the dialog box will be shown if the filter is activated.

The following filter criteria are available:

- **Start time** — The start time for the list view.
- **End time** — The time at which the list ends its view.
- **Objects** — Multiple-choice list where you can select the desired objects for the view.
- **Alarm type** — Multiple-choice list where you can choose one or several alarm types.
- **Event** — Multiple-choice list where alarm events are chosen. Only event alarms will be shown if this filter is used.

### Edit event alarm

The unit sends an event message when the unit’s condition changes. Some events depend on external equipment, others depend on the unit’s settings. Changes to the unit settings must be made by Guard Systems.

Events can be divided into the following types:

- **Digital input** — The unit has one or several digital inputs that can be used, depending on the unit and how it is configured. When a digital input is connected and the unit is configured to send an event for it, the unit will send an event when the input’s condition changes.
- **Diagnostic events** — The unit has several ways to report when its surroundings are no longer optimal, for example low external voltage or disconnected external power. Some of these must be configured for the environment they’re used in — for example, the unit must know the voltage level it’s normally attached to. The standard is 12V.
- **Calculated events** — Some events are calculated based on the environment and must be set up in the unit to function, for example a high speed limit being exceeded, movement without ignition on, or driving without identification.

**Fields, page 1:**

- **Title** — Used only for the overview; has no effect on the alert.
- **Objects** — Select which objects the alarm should apply to.
- **Object groups** — Select which object groups the alarm should apply to. If an object is added to a group after the alarm is created, it automatically becomes part of that alarm. An object will never receive a message more than once, even if it’s checked under both Objects and a checked object group.
- **E-Mail** — List of contacts to be alerted by e-mail. You can add several contacts or contact groups. The contacts’ given e-mail addresses are what gets used — if an e-mail address is changed, all alerts using it will also change.
- **Cellphone** — List of contacts to be alerted by SMS.
- **Event** — List of available events.
- **Alert driver** — If checked, the object’s driver will receive the message. If there is no active driver, the alert will be canceled.
- **Popup** — If checked, a popup alert will be visible inside the system for the FleetSystem user.
- **Message text** — Text entered here entirely replaces the default message text. You can use codes to include information about which object the alert applies to and when the incident took place — for example: “Battery about to be discharged on %LT. The message was registered %ON.” Here, %LT is replaced with the object name and %ON with the time the incident was registered. Codes can be inserted using the drop-down menu and clicking “Insert.”
- **Alarm** — Activates or deactivates the alarm. An inactive alarm will not send alerts or be logged.

![](https://support.gsfleet.io/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-50-25-6567-AM.png?width=577&height=502&name=image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-50-25-6567-AM.png)

**Fields, page 2:**

- **Alarm delay** — This value indicates how long it takes after an event triggers an alert before the same event can trigger a new alert. Events reported within this period will not be logged. The period applies individually to each object.
- **Towing** — If the alarm is “Location altered with ignition off,” a message is sent if the object is moved. For example, no message will be sent if this filter is turned on and a generator is being moved while another unit with ignition on from the same company is within a 5 km radius.
- **SMS control** — Using SMS control, you can temporarily activate or deactivate an alarm via SMS message, to prevent false alarms depending on what is being controlled. If SMS control is set to activate the alarm, it stays inactive until an SMS is sent to activate it — typical for analog temperature sensors. If SMS control is set to deactivate the alarm, the alarm is normally on but gets deactivated when an SMS is sent — typical for towing or ignition-on alarms.
**Note:** All use of SMS control is logged in a separate log. Activations and deactivations are done per object connected to the alarm. Unless otherwise specified, an activation reverts to normal mode if no deactivation command is sent within the time limit; the time limit is set under company settings.
- **Time zone** — Time zone for the time shown on alerts.
- **Language** — Set the desired language here, if the message is system-generated.
- **Periods** — An additional restriction on when the alarm is active can be set by defining a specific time span. If the alarm occurs outside the set time span, no alert is sent and no event is logged. The period follows the selected time zone.

### Edit watchdog

Objects are monitored based on the last time they reported to the server. If there have been no reports within a fixed time span, an alert will be sent.

See *Edit event alarm* above for a description of the common fields.

**Field specific to monitoring:**

- **Not reported in** — Set the time span that must not be exceeded.

**Note:** If a unit stops reporting for a period of time, this may be caused by something other than a fault with the unit. Objects transported by boat can be in inaccessible places and may lose connection for periods of time. This can lead to false alarms if the interval is set too short.

### Edit POI alarm

![](https://support.gsfleet.io/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-50-57-3298-AM.png?width=240&height=127&name=image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-50-57-3298-AM.png)

A POI can be set up to generate passage information; this is done on the POI group. A POI alarm monitors these passages and alerts if the object/POI combination matches the alarm setup.

See *Edit event alarm* for a description of the common fields.

**Field specific to the POI alarm:**

- **POI** — Choose one or several POIs to set up with alerts.

### Edit sensor alarm

![](https://support.gsfleet.io/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-51-13-3949-AM.png?width=258&height=190&name=image-png-Oct-21-2026-07-51-13-3949-AM.png)

A sensor alarm monitors all analog inputs on units equipped with them. When a sensor reaches one of the stated limits for sensor alarms, an alert is sent to the specified addresses.

See *Edit event alarm* for a description of the common fields.

**Fields specific to the sensor alarm:**

- **Sensor** — Selects which sensor is to be monitored. Sensors labeled “MKT” report the same value as their non-MKT counterpart, but the value is smoothed to avoid noise peaks.
- **High value** — If the sensor value exceeds the specified value, an alert is sent.
- **Low value** — If the sensor value goes below the specified value, an alert is sent.
- **Delayed transmission** — If a delay is set, sending the alert is postponed for the specified period. If the value returns to the normal range before the message is sent, the alert is canceled and not logged.
